The hotplug package and udev filesystem will make you wish it were this easy in Windows. It's just a different approach. You need to remember that you put learning into Windows. MS's approach isn't the only approach, and it's not right to think their design is the only one out there. Chintzy, USB network interfaces should only be used as a last resort when you can't use Ethernet anyway, even in Windows (sadly, I've even heard of win-bridges for DSL now).
