Burning from /dev/hdd is possible at 1x, but I never want to do that anyway. /dev/hdd is there because one day after writing some files from Linux to my Windoze partition /dev/hda1, I booted Windoze to find the root directory and FAT trashed. I didn't particularly want to experiment to find out why, so now I just use a sacrificial HD. Why are some CD-ROMs fussy about being the slave, given that the subservience implied by the name does not actually exist in the hardware? Some WDC2850 HDs (not the one above) are like this too.
