I appreciate the help with my query.

I was able to solve the problem after stumbling upon some earlier
messages from the list.
The problem is that, upon recompiling the kernel, I failed to build in
the first and sixth items under
"network options," I think they were, which are necessary for DHCP to
function. After
recompiling once more, the card is working.
