I have had the same problem. Re start xconfig, and use simple option for monitor modes where it just asks for the monitor size. Select the resolutions you like, and it should work.

I didn't bother downloading the drivers from nvidia.com The next step was to edit my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and comment the line under the "Section Device" UseFBDev.
