Demand-dialing brings up the connection automatically if and only if something such as a browser tries to connect to the Net. The connection goes down after a configurable idle period.
I tried to use demand dialing a while back when I didn't have a router. The only thing I didn't like about it was that you had to know your own IP address before you made the connection which was impossible with my IP's being assigned dynamically by the ISP.
