After help from the list, I was able to configure my OPL3SA2 sound card with ALSA. Now, however, I cannot get the CDROM drive to play an audio CD. Gnome-CD and Ascd see the music CD, read the title, and spin the disk. But no sound. The sound modules are loaded, and alsamixer has the levels properly adjusted.
I am not sure how, but at first, I could play CDs, at least from root. I tried to add myself to the audio and cdrom groups, but I got the message that I was already a member. How do I get audio CDs to play? Is there something else to configure in ALSA?
