yes its a laptop keyboard, so Delete (unlike Backspace) requires a two-key combination, which is just a pain. when you think about it... thats 4 keys you need to press in order to clear the taskbar, but a single click could do the same thing.
to be honest... i use this key combination and always have... but i much prefer the button Thunderbird implements. since no-one seems to have written an extension to do this (its maybe a little ridiculous to write an extension for something so trivial), i have opened up a wishlist report on bugzilla
