dist-upgrade

Hi   I have got hold of a 'sarge' installation cd #1. I am currently running 'stable'. To minimise the disturbance to my system, I would like to do a apt dist-upgrade rather than a new installation with the cd. Is that possible? If yes, then how?   Thks   Jianan
