Hello all. I'm running testing with all the latest packages as of Nov 14. I have a Matrox G100 card with four vga ports. It was working great until I rebooted my workstation yesterday. Unfortunately it had an uptime of over 120 days and I don't believe I restarted my X session during that time. In other words, I don't know what version of X and related packages last worked - only that 120 days ago X started up fine.
When I try to start X with my original XF86Config-4 file, it complains about my DefaultDepth. So I lowered that from 16 to 8. Then it complained about not finding /dev/input/mice. So I commented out that mouse definition. Then it complained about DRI only being supported for the G200/G400/G550 cards. So I commented out all parts that referenced DRI. It still complains about DRI. After much searching (and not much luck) on Google web & newsgroups I went and installed the following from stable out of desperation: xfree86-common_4.1.0-16_all.deb xlib6g_4.1.0-16_all.deb xlibs_4.1.0-16_i386.deb xserver-common_4.1.0-16_i386.deb xserver-xfree86_4.1.0-16_i386.deb The error messages were rearranged, but still no X. In all cases and XF86Config-4 files, all my monitors come out of power save mode, flicker a few seconds later, then I'm thrown back to console. I'm attaching my original XF86Config-4 last known to work, along with the console output of startx when I try and use it now. I'm also attaching the XF86Config-4 file with DefaultDepth lowered to 8 and DRI stuff commented out, along with the console output of startx when I try and use that. Any assistance or insight would be appreciated. As much as I love console, even in "extended" vga mode, I've been spoiled by 1280x1024 desktops with large rxvts and tiny fonts. :) Here's some other (hopefully) useful info: $ uname -a Linux haze 2.4.18 #1 SMP Wed Nov 13 14:31:59 EST 2002 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux /proc/pci: Bus 2, device 1, function 0: VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. In case my attachment gets mangled, here's the output of startx with my DefaultDepth set to 8 and DRI stuff commented out: $ startx hostname 2.08 XFree86 Version 4.2.1 (Debian 4.2.1-3 20021016191246 [EMAIL PROTECTED]) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 3 September 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. Odd, that it's still trying to use DRI even though I commented it all out from XF86Config-4.
