suggestions for getting a USB mouse working, all of them different, and none
of them successful (at least, of the ones I've understood well enough to

Just as an emergency work-around, you should be able to press Shift-Numlock, which will turn on the "keypad mouse" feature. Then the 5 key is a click, the other keys move the mouse in certain directions; the / sets 5 to left-click; the * sets the 5 to middle-click; - sets the 5 to right-click; 0 is click-and-hold; Del is unhold, etc.
Shift-Numlock again will turn off the feature.
