Thanks to everyone who replied, they have been a great help. 
Unfortunately I managed to completely bork the whole installation and 
ended up having to start again from scratch! I probably could have 
recovered without reinstalling, but it would have taken much longer.

I'll try the suggestions again, and let you know what it was just in 
case someone else has the same problem.
