When memtest86 is run the kernel isn't. No other program is but memtest. If it is showing memory problems, thats the problem! Now I have nerver run the package memtester, so I don't know if thats what you are running, but I doubt any 'real' memeroy test program would be able to test the memory with anything else running. If you have more then one memory stick, try testing them one at a time.
