sorry about the wrong subject, initially.
i should also have said that DISPLAY is not set on the remote machine (using ssh -X)
Make sure that the remote machine has /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth (from the xbase-clients) package installed. Without it you will not be able to setup the DISPLAY of the remote machine to point back to you through the tunnel.
