Hi Dan,
it sounds like a 'finger fumble'.
vi $FILE 
to look at it
and run 
file $FILE
and see what it says.
to be 100% safe, do 
mv $FILE $FILE.old
and reboot.
and make sure you have a bootable cd just in case you needed it for
something.
if after a few reboots all is ok, delete the file.
