There are many situations where "machine should stay down, until the new replacement disk is sync'd ... and that can be a whole day" is totally, absolutely unacceptable. Perfect example: a box handling Customer Service Representatives in a "bricks and mortar" environment. You walk into the electric company during lunch hour to pay your bill, only to see a long line because "the computer is down", syncing 200GB disks.
