strange that you're encountering a problem on your video card model (ati radeon 7500). I do have the same card, but didn't encounter much problems: Try doing the configuration the debian way via dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. Chances are it would give you sane defaults for vertical and horizontal refresh rates. If you've installed the read-edid and discover packages it would help a lot. Debconf should configure your setup to use the ati driver.
