I will try this. Yes, it is still prompting me for a password.
Moreover, debug output contains no mention of shosts.equiv or even
the global known_hosts file.

What's the format of the latter? Is it like ~/.ssh/known_hosts, or
like the ssh_host_*_key.pub files?
