Ah, thanks for the link to the bug tracking info - adding the group sasl worked, as mentioned at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=273719
So all I did was :
1. apt-get install sendmail (which caused the errors as previously discussed)
2. addgroup sasl
3. apt-get -f install (this time all went smoothly)
