I am also facing the same problem.
I tried xf86config many times...at the end it asks to write changes to
/etc/X11/XF86Config. I did startx but it didn't work. Then I copied
XF86Config to XF86Config-4 and it works now.
But the resolution is still 800x600 even if I remove all other
resolutions except 1024x768.
My monitor is Dell 773S. I also tried with Samsung Syncmaster 793s.
Video card is: Intel 82865G

How do I get 800x600 without even mentioning it in my X file?

Regards;
Rituraj

Subject: x server configuration problems

Hello everyone,

i m new to Debian. I managed more or less to install debian
successfully.
My problem is that i cannot change the resolution of my screen.it keeps
the
size 800x600.
i would like to use the resolution 1027x768.
I configured many times the x server using the command:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
i also tried to change the config file.
My monitor is a Nokia 500Xa.
In each configuration, i only enabled 1024x768 and removed all other
modes.

the resolution is still 800x600.

What is the problem?

Who has a perfect X server configuration for me??

thanks a lot
sebastien
