If at all possible, you should not install anything in non-deb format, unless you exactly know what you are doing and how to do it without breaking consistency of your system. In most cases a deb may be obtained. If you don't know yet how to create debs, educate yourself. It's not difficult. Just read new maintainer's guide :).
