Thanks. Do you know of any alternative text interface?  I'm not to
crazy about guis. The default text interface does not seem to allow
speed change. As a matter of fact it doesn't seem to allow pretty much
anything at all.

no.  indeed, textinterface seems not have that facility as far as i 
know. so you need 'the'  fancy alsaplayer- gui with a knob on it to do 
what you want: varying speed. kpackage has all you need if you decide 
for a gui instead of text/commandline version.
