The suggested way is to use "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86". If you
know the monitor specs (you only need to know the vertical and
horizontal max refresh frequency) you can choose "advanced" in the
monitor configuration and insert them, and then choose the preferred
resolution (it will default to the biggest one IIRC).
