You can try using esddsp.  Run "esddsp saydate".  This forces the
program to use esd (Gnome's sound daemon) to play sounds.

xmms has an esd output, so you should be able to use that.

I believe there is a better-behaved version of esd out there somewhere,
though.  Either a later version, or a modified version, which releases
/dev/dsp when it is not in use.  I'm afraid I don't remember much more,
though.
