MOST things work, Configging a kernel is an arduous process of booting and then figuring out what you got wrong. It's a pain in the ass. I have that T-shirt in spades. In fact, I had a need to do up a custom kernel recently, and I only made it to the third configure/compile/install/lilo/reboot phase before I said the hell with it and decided I didn't have as much need after all. That was starting with someone else's config too. There are a million little things to get wrong. No, it still works, although Debian doesn't have a good kernel install script the way some other distros do, so make install sometimes leaves you with extra work to do by hand. I seem to recall. I haven't built a kernel the old fashioned way in years. Debian's kernel-package kernel build system is an idea other distros should rip off. Even though it's not distro-agnostic, you might want to look at it anyway, just to see what you're missing. It's the reason Debian doesn't have a good kernel-install script.
