In answer to the above, and from memory... aptitude apt-get upgrade and dpkg -f update Or whatever the prompted command is when something has gone wroong with the apt archives. Anyway, thanks for the help. Things were rather urgent, and so the offending machine was replaced by another, configured from scratch, and then the root partition on the faulty machine was reinstalled over. This explains also why I have been rather slow with my answer and thanks.
