A few hints from *you* would be helpful, too. :-) I presume you have a sound card. Which one? What does /etc/modutils/alsa contain? Does "lsmod" show that any snd* drivers are loaded? If the drivers are not getting loaded automatically, try using modprobe to load the one for your card.
