Long-time Slackware user here now running Gnome on an new Sid machine.
All is well, but here are two X Window anoyances that I haven't figured
out:

1. GDM fails at boot, dropping into console screen displaying a
curses-based dialogue. This dialogue does not display correctly -- all
the characters show as gibberish -- but it is obviously asking a "yes"
or
"no" question. Selecting the "no' option brings up a console login
screen, where I am able to login and use startx to launch X with no
problems. I'm now using XDM without this problem, but would rather use
GDM, given XDM's lack of options and general ugliness. I've seen no
relevant log entries. Googling hasn't uncovered anything that seems
related. Anyone else see this?

2. Do I really need to keep the "unix/:7100" fontpath line in
XF86Config-4? I understand that XFree86 on Sid doesn't use xft. Is
there any reason to install xft on a standalone machine?

3. Defoma: I've installed and read all the documentation I can find,
but still lack a clear idea of what defoma is supposed to do, how it
does it, and what, if anything, I need to know about it. I gather it
does some magic -- creating hints and aliases -- when fonts are
installed from a deb. However, I've installed some fonts from a tar
file. Should I point some part of defoma at those parts?

Thanks.
