I prefer to use the release name instead of 'stable', 'testing' and 'unstable'; especially in a corporate environment. Reason being - upgrading all of the servers to a new release takes a lot of time. And with any release, even Debian's remarkably good ones, you should test it on a non-critical computer/server before using it on everything. By using release names, you can continue to get security updates while you're waiting to install the new release; whether you're waiting for the new release to pass your tests, or just waiting for the time to do the dist-upgrade. > > apt-get update > > apt-get upgrade ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This step really isn't necessary, though. I dist-upgraded from Potato to Woody and then from Woody to Sarge. It's been working great without the need for a clean install.
