The problem was solved by just rebooting the machine. From the following syslog entries I assume that the LVM data structures within the kernel got out of sync: ReiserFS: dm-3: found reiserfs format "3.6" with standard journal attempt to access beyond end of device dm-3: rw=0, want=83886088, limit=83886080 attempt to access beyond end of device dm-3: rw=0, want=84148232, limit=83886080 ... ReiserFS: dm-3: warning: sh-2029: reiserfs read_bitmaps: bitmap block (#10485760) reading failed ReiserFS: dm-3: warning: jmacd-8: reiserfs_fill_super: unable to read bitmap After reboot reiserfsck reports no problems any more and mounting the volume is possible again.
