I ended up just extracting the file by hand from the exim4-config .deb package ( ar -x ) and read the update-exim4.conf man page ;) But it was all in vein. I got a config working based on the exim distribution sample. The debian one actually isn't working for me, and although I'm curious why, I'm on to other things now.
