The problem stemmed from the /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx script not being updated by either the package or myself. I had not thought about that as a point where trouble could arise. The older script was hard-coded for the older driver, rather than being more generic in design like the newer script. The tls libs were never set up properly as a result. I have filed a bug report against nvidia-glx suggesting a change in the management of this.
