I've never used xplanet (plan to give it a try soon since seeing your
post), but I just looked at the config file that was shown at
xplanet.sourceforge.net, and there's an option setting called -vroot
that you might want to play around with.  Seems xscreensaver uses a
virtual root window, and using -vroot with xplanet will cause it to use
a virtual root window too.  Perhaps then it will be recognized.
