It doesn't look like anyone has mentioned this alternative. If you want to go totally bare bones, you can use xinit /path/to/binary Maybe *too* minmalistic for a web browser, but I use this all the time when I'm primarly working at the command line and I need to run a single, simple graphical program for something. No window manager.
