XFree86 4.2 update howto?

Hi All,

I am new to Debian & am trying to figure out a few things.

How do I solve the folloing error message?

bash: ./synaptic: No such file or directory
(none):/home/haralambos# synaptic
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
synaptic:could not open display
(none):/home/haralambos#

Secondly, what is the easiest way to point Synaptic to a local Debian mirror & download/install it?
