you must of course do it as root. And you only use ./ if you are in the same directory to which it was downloaded. If you downloaded into /home/whateveryourusername[is as root you do dpkg -i /home/whateveryourusernameis/whatever.deb. If you see dependency error messages and it doesn't install, you will have to obtain the missing packages cited. Only go download a .deb when there's some reason you can't apt-get it, in my opinion.
