Sounds like some sort of video playing library has been replaced by 
Mplayer, that is hosing your playback ability.

I don't know what I'm talking about, but you might try running "strace 
xine", and see if that output gives you any clues. If you see any 
library names, you might try reinstalling them from the official Debian 
repositories.
