make install, iirc, does a compile as well - not sure if it tries to
link a zImage or defaults now to a bzImage, but I'd thought it also ran
lilo. That said, I wouldn't dare run lilo until the modules were also in
place, in case of a power outage or major compilation crash on the
modules.
