Success! I finally have sound! Since others may be having or have had similar problems I would like to note that Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 works perfectly on Debian with kernel 2.6.7-1 running. My previous sound card installed by Dell on my Dimension 8100 (a now 2-3 year old computer with a 1.2 GHx PIV) was a Santa Cruz Voyetra Turtle Beach Card. And while the kernel appeared to recognize the card during start-up based on the on-screen boot text, I was never able to get it to produce anything other than a loud squeal. After doing some online "research" I saw others had similar problems with their sound cards installed by OEMs which are not got exactly equivalent to their retail counterparts. The SoundBlaster Live! card cost only $32.39 (with Ohio tax) at CompUSA and I am now listening to streaming music from Streamtuner which is a really awesome online radio/music program...many, many more stations already programmed in than what you get with iTunes. Rhythmbox is another really neat piece of software.
