ATI is nice, I think. I specifically bought a laptop with an ATI card. It works very well for me using the open source drivers. Of course, ATI has proprietary drivers which are (supposed to be) even better. BUT: before you buy I card, google around for specific models. For example, ATI cards are well-supported, except for the newest models (9800 or something like that). Probably the ATI proprietary driver _does_ support them, but you should want to use it.
