This is quite common on laptops. What happens is that before X starts
(whether it be from the command-line via startx, or [wxkg]dm) the screen
is initially blanked, before the graphics card can process the signal.
Often, if the delay is negligable, you won't notice before the Xserver
remaps the window, but sometimes it can get "stuck". Solution: just move
your mouse. :)
