cannot rm file

I cannot upgrade libasound2 because it is trying to overwrite a file called /usr/share/alsa/cards/ICH.conf. When I try to remove the file as root, I get this:

rm: cannot lstat `/usr/share/alsa/cards/ICH.conf': Permission denied

When I try to ls the directory as root, I get this:

ls: /usr/share/alsa/cards/ICH.conf: Permission denied

I have no idea what to do or what might be causing this. Any suggestions?
