It's also this bug (although it seems to be misreported): http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=254923 and this is the temporary fix: $ xmodmap -e 'clear mod1' -e 'add mod1 = Alt_L' or you can downgrade xlibs to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4.
