Finally the problem was on the .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 file that autogenerates the .gtkrc file.
The solution was to adjust the correct settings to .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 like: style "user-font" { font="-microsoft-verdana-medium-r-normal-*-*-90-*-*-p-*-viscii1.1-1" } widget_class "*" style "user-font" and only to this file and NOT to .gtkrc as it is link to the .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2.
