Hi All, When I boot my new install of Woody, I can see boot messages until it loads gdm, then the screen goes black. At this point I can't press the Numlock key to get the light to go on/off. I can't change terminals either (Alt+Ctrl+F2), Alt+F4, etc.
The only way I can get to a login prompt is if I remove the XF86Config-4 file. When I do so, My machine gives me a text login, and asks if I wan to configure X. I do, and try startx, and then get a black screen again. I have tried dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 with the same results. I am writing this email with a working Rhat partition on the same box. I've tried cutting and pasting the card and monitor device sections and pasting them into the Woody's XF86Config-4 file from the working Redhat XF86Config-4 file, with the same black screen of death. I've tried copying the file in whole with no avail as well. What's odd is that each time I try to start X, the log file is not updated from the time I booted without the XF86Config-4 file, so I can't tell where it's failing. I have tried settings of 640x480 with 8 bit color, and that doesn't go either. How can I find out what is causing the "black screen"? Is there something else I can post to help you help me?
