I just checked /etc/init.d/module-init-tools, and it seems to use the 
first of the following files in this order of preference:

/etc/modules-$KVER
/etc/modules-2.6
/etc/modules

where $KVER=`uname -r`, e.g. 2.6.3-1-k7
