Yeah, I do have:
uccellina:~!133> id -a
uid=9258(ruf) gid=111(private) groups=111(private),4(adm),6(disk)...

If I had not read/write permissions, I could not read the content of the 
cdrom.

However, were the mount/umount programs required to be set-uid'ed
root?  Or would this cause an extreme security hole?
