I've never heard of using a wildcard with modprobe.

modprobe -l *
[no results]
in /lib/modules/[nameofkernel] i have nice looking modules...

hmm, have i just been staring at the machine too long... any clues for the
problem? what is going on?

What's the result of "uname -a"? of "ls -l /vmlinuz*"? of "ls -l 
/lib/modules"?
