Interesting. You did make me open my computer to have a look,
as I wasn't that sure myself ;-)

The cable is connected though.

OK, I added these to my personal account in /etc/group. Still, I was
trying cd-playing as root all the time (not very good, I know), but then
I suppose group membership should not be an issue. If it works with root
and not for J. Doe User, then I knew its a permissions problem ...
Seems not to be that alone. Although, as non-root user I _do_ get
"permission denied" for /dev/hdd (which is my CDROM). How can I fix
that? I am in the cdrom group, which owners ought to have /dev/hdd
(/dev/cdrom is a symlink to it)?

I wasn't, but I was root then (see above).
I actually installed aumixer already. Could there be a conflict with
another mixer around (from the base install)?

I'm still clueless. Could be that I mucked up my devices during the
install (I had to do MAKEDEV once). And I don't understand the logic
behind the audio and cdrom groups. Can't I just put option user in fstab
for /cdrom? And what is audio group for?

Thanks for your tips so far,

Christian
