I think it would be worth trying the boot floppy approach. Yesterday I transferred a CD drive from one machine to another, but although it was working previously I couldn't persuade the BIOS to recognize the drive in its new home. Then I remembered that Linux doesn't use the BIOS so I tried boot floppies and, sure enough, the drive was recognized without trouble.
