When I switched from a geforce 2mx to a geforce 4 ti, I had the same problem. There are two options. Upgrade to XFree 4.2 which is now in unstable or you can use the drivers Nvidia provides instead of the driver that is part of XFree. If you want to play games, you'll want the Nvidia drivers. Otherwise it doesn't really matter on a technical level (both work). Getting the Nvidia drivers is perhaps a bit easier and is less risky (unless you already track unstable ofcourse).
